To make something open source, means to make the blueprint (source) of that thing freely accessible and depending on the accompanied license also editable and distributable. In software this means giving access to the source code.

The open source philosophy is based on collaboration, sharing and community.

The open source movement comes from the software world, but has slowly made is way into AEC. The increasing digitization in the industry, but also the slow tempo of that digitization, have created a platform for open source in the industry.

I think, the contrast between how rapid digitization is changing other industries and our personal lives and how slow the adoption in AEC is, creates a vacuum, that provokes young minds (like myself) to think how digitization could solve the issues we are facing as an industry.

On one hand the industry needs digitization on the other hand it doesn't have the resources for it.

Open source could be an answer to that.

It all starts by talking about it.
Finding ways to collaborate comes next.
Sharing code last.
